Perched in the spectacular mountain landscape of Saas-Fee, Hotel Alpin gave us a unique brief to design furniture that combined material innovation with luxury hospitality. The result is a series of tables built specifically for the hotel, designed to act as tactile connections between the warm interior and the powerful geology outside.
The core of this collection is the 3D-printed base. We used recyclable silica sand for fabrication, resulting in forms that echo alpine structures. The complex layering and shifting pressures of geological time are translated directly into the 3D data, creating pieces that have a quiet, sculptural weight. Within the warm environment of the hotel, the intricate fabrication marks and voids—the "fingerprints" of our process—come alive, catching the shift in daylight.
We carefully paired these sand bases with classic hardwood and clean glass to ensure functional durability and a sense of refined craft. But beyond form and function, the true innovation is in the ecological cycle of renewal.
These tables are not designed for a single life. Their 3D-printed bases embrace circular production. Each one can eventually be returned to powder and reprinted into something entirely new, embodying a continuous, ecological flow of materials. This award from the IDA recognizes the value of this integrated, cyclical approach to design.
