Wedge is a London-based design and research studio founded by Andy Zhang, Lei Zhang and Peiyan Zou. Merging material ecology, emerging technologies, and cultural research, the studio develops a synthetic approach that orchestrates the agencies of human, machine, and matter within shared authorship.

Manifesto

Activating Dimensionality expresses a vision in which design expands beyond form to connect perception, technology, and material intelligence.

Approach

The studio takes its name from the Grassmann wedge product in differential geometry, a mathematical operation that constructs higher-dimensional spaces from existing dimensions. Wedge translates this idea into design: separating, adjusting, and recomposing matter, pixels, and time.

Co-Author with Machine

We investigate how computation, algorithms, and artificial intelligence move beyond being mere tools to become genuine co-authors in the design process. By embracing machine agency, we explore how digital systems propose, adapt, and transform creative outcomes—reshaping not just how things are made, but also how ideas emerge and evolve through human–machine collaboration.

Co-Living with Human

Our work foregrounds the sensory and cognitive experiences of people. We design processes that create richer and more meaningful interactions—linking digital workflows, spatial environments, and material presence. By engaging sight, touch, and movement, we ensure design outcomes resonate emotionally and physically, making the digital deeply tangible.

Co-Designing with Matter

We study materials as living systems—responsive, adaptive, and inseparable from the technologies and ecosystem in which they operate. Our research looks at material behaviors, cycles, and renewability, combining emerging technologies with natural processes to advance circular, sustainable, and intelligent modes of making.

Team

Andy (Chuheng) Zhang

Co-Founder, Strategics

A former quantitative trader and professional skier with a background in theoretical physics from Imperial College London and EPFL. He leads Wedge’s strategic and operational development, ensuring complex research translates into viable commercial and spatial systems.

Peiyan Zou

Co-Founder, Director

An award-winning artist and architectural designer from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Harvard GSD candidate, he previously worked at Sir Peter Cook’s studio and INSTANCE BV. He directs Wedge’s creative vision and design development, leading multidisciplinary projects across both bespoke and architectural scales.

Ray (Lei) Zhang

Co-Founder, R&D

An artist and architectural designer (Architectural Association) and Harvard GSD candidate who previously worked as computational designer at BIG and AL_A. He leads Wedge’s technological innovation and material experimentation while overseeing the studio’s brand strategy and media direction.

Andrew Fan

Business Development Manager / Concept Artist

A Bartlett First Class Honours graduate and current MedTech CMO specializing in scaling complex systems and international partnerships. He leads Wedge’s commercial evolution and provides strategic insights into the studio’s artistic direction and curation.

Shuheng Wang

Sustainability Specialist

An artist and designer from The Bartlett specializing in sustainable development and production optimization. He translates experimental research into circular systems and directs the studio’s acoustic specialized design through the lens of machine agency.

Yuhan Wu

Fabrication Specialist

A Bartlett First Class Honours graduate and Technology Futures Prize winner with prior experience at Studio Dera. He focuses on digital fabrication and prototypical spatial objects, utilizing LiDAR surveying to build experimental test beds for studio research.

Project Highlights

EPOCH I

"Few studios today manage to define a visual and tactile language of their own. Wedge is one of them. Their works look like they belong to nature, but clearly come from digital processes. It is a design that sits between geology and code."

What we do

We live in a moment where technology, materials, and culture are converging to reshape how we design and interact with our environment. As a studio for research and practice, Wedge explores new ways for people, machines, and matter to create together. Working across the digital and the physical, we build dimensional experiences for a world in transition.
